Sports Funding

What is the Sports Premium?

The purpose of the Sports Premium is to fund additional and sustained improvements to the provision of PE and Sport, for the benefit of primary aged pupils, to encourage healthy, active lifestyles.

The sport funding will be “ring-fenced” so can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.

The aims of the funding are to ensure children have opportunities to:

  • Lead healthy lifestyles
  • Enjoy Physical Education and sport in schools
  • Experience high quality Physical Education and sport
  • Compete against their peers
  • Achieve sporting excellence

Purpose of funding
Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.
Possible uses for the funding include:

  • Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
  • Paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
  • Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport
  • Running sport competitions, or increasing participation in the school games
  • Buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE/sport
  • Ensuring high quality resources to supplement the PE curriculum/Playtimes/Lunchtimes

Allocations are calculated using the number of pupils in Years 1-6 as recorded in the January census, as follows:

  • Schools with 17 or more pupils receive £16,000 plus £10 per pupil
  • Schools with16 or fewer pupils receive £1000 per pupil

School must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE, physical activity, and sport for the benefit of all primary aged pupils to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles.
